On-line Viscosity Measuring Principle
Inline viscometers can be used for monitoring viscosity in a process stream or vessel. This inline viscometer
correlates with Brookfield and other viscometers measuring viscosity in centipoise or poise.
The sensor is a vibrating rod held in oscillation by a drive magnet. When the rod is immersed
in a viscous material the amplitude of the vibration is dampened. The sensor magnet detects the response and
the signal is converted to viscosity through the electronics.

The main advantages of this online viscometer are:
-
Real time process viscosity measurement
-
Simple design and no wearing parts .... Excellent reliability and very low
maintenance
-
Repeatability 0.2% of full scale
-
Self cleaning: rod vibration at 300Hz reduces sooting
-
Manufactured with 316L Stainless steel, optional Hasteloy, Monel or Teflon coatings are
available
-
Suitable for harsh operating conditions ... up to 300° C (572° F) and up to 150 bars (2100 PSI)
Class 1, Div 1
-
Easily mounted in any direction pipe line, vessel, or bypass stream
-
Small size
-
Different electronics are available to customize the necessary output
-
Easily customize the viscosity range
-
The viscometer system is composed of a sensor and electronics.
Sensor Options:
-
CIVI - Viscosity probe operates up to 100° C
-
MIVI - Viscosity, optional temperature probe, operates up to 200° C (300° C optional)
-
PIVI - NEW - Portable viscometer, as stable in a process as in a lab
Electronic Options:
-
8004 process viscosity signal only
-
8001 process viscosity and temperature signals
-
8002 process viscosity and temperature signals that allows mathematical correction for
temperature changes. These electronics have been useful in viscosity control of asphalt binder, providing
instantaneous results to the control room, reduced labor and automated control loops and safeties.

Online Viscosity Index Measures viscosity (with an option for density) at a set temperature by
measuring an online sample in a measuring chamber. The sample is conditioned to a set temperature, then the
viscosity is measured. The sample is then returned to the process stream. This system is ideally suited to be
used for inline viscosity index.
